It is therefore important not to breed from such cats if possible.
In this way and the small proportion of white cats that can hear will become more common and the defect could, in theory, be wiped out after a few generations.
The particular combination of white fur and blue eyes seems to be the crucial one, and this is brought home vividly in the case of odd-eyed cats. Sometimes a white cat is born with one blue eye and one orange eye.
In such cases and tests show that only the ear on the side of the blue eye is deaf. The ear on the side of the orange eye works perfectly well in most cases.
Such cats may be at a disadvantage when hunting, because their sense of directional sound will be poor, but in other respects they can lead normal lives and make good mothers.
Owners of deaf white cats report that their pets are brilliant at compensating for their genetic disability.
They become extra sensitive to tiny vibrations made by sounds and can almost “hear through their feet”.
Their watchfulness is also dramatically increased and so that they can make maximum use of their excellent sense of vision.
Indeed it is not such a great tragedy to discover that a pet cat is deaf, although there is a sad weakening of the intimate communication system that cat owners and their cats enjoy sharing.
But, like the cat itself and the owners can learn to become more visual in their feline exchanges, using gestures and movements where otherwise they might have used the human voice. Are tortoiseshell cats always female?
Nearly always.
The chances of finding a male tortoiseshell have been calculated at about 200 to 1. They may be extremely rare but they do exist.
This poses two questions: why are almost all tortoiseshells females, and why, if males are so unfavoured in this colour-form, do they appear at all? First, what exactly is a tortoiseshell cat?
Although there are some variations, it is essentially a cat that displays an irregular pattern of black and red fur.
“Red” is the technical term for what most people would call ginger, orange or marmalade.
Red cats are essentially red tabbies, with the red coloration in dark and light bands rather than uniformly spread.
So a tortoiseshell cat is in reality a cat that is part black and part red tabby, giving it a tri-coloured look.
What makes the sex distribution of these cats so odd is that normally only a female kitten can display black patches inherited from one parent and red tabby patches inherited from the other.

If you want K442 you must go to the historic monto set by Lili Kraus and co. on EMI, or the second and somewhat overblown stylistically , Beaux Arts Trio set on Philips; but it is no masterpiece.
The first of the Trios, K254, is really a “Divertimento”, and the last, K564, is also a slight work (though a great favourite of mine).
To concentrate on comparisons between the period instrument groups and the London Fortepiano Trio’s main asset is Monica Huggett, perhaps the world’s best player of early violins.
The Mozartean Players are an American group consisting of Steven Lubin on fortepiano, Stanley Ritchie, a vastly experienced violinist, and the cellist Myron Lutzke.
I don’t find Ritchie to be much behind Huggett in style and purity of tone; the cellists are about equal; and I definitely prefer the playing of Steven Lubin by a small margin.
He also uses a modern reproduction piano, which is a shade safer than Linda Nicholson’s refurbished old piano.
I find Lubin’s fingerwork in faster movements absolutely sparkling; and the slightly more flowing tempi he adopts in the slower movements are more to my taste.
Since the keyboard instrument sets the tone of the entire performance in a Mozart Trio and this tips the scale in favour of the Mozarteans, even without their price advantage.
They are mellowly recorded and Lubin provides a very readable essay on the music “though it is admittedly not a detailed as Timothy Crawford’s for Hyperion. [TP]
Sontas for Piano and Violin
KANTOROV (violin), PLANES (piano)
This could so easily have been a recommendable mid-price set of Mozart’s mature Piano and Violin Sonatas, but it is arguably put out of court by the early digital recording (made between 1975 and 1978) which gives the violin an unpleasant rough edgy tone.
Background hiss levels are quite high, and sometimes alter in mid-track, and there is little if any sense of ambience and the sound being dry and colourless.
The performances are certainly very competent, but this isn’t quite the vintage Kantorov we’ve come to expect from some of his later Denon recordings; a degree of blandness gives the playing a slightly “automatic” quality.
With Barenboim and Perlman’s set available as a mid-priced four-CD box () and readers need look no further, for there the music-making is inspired and the recording is first-rate. [JMH]

Again and again, he returned amongst the debris and succeeded in bringing out two more children, one of whom died in his arms.”
Next, he lost to Bill Cousens after 111 rounds, but instead of being discouraged went on to beat all foes in the next ten years.
When Jem Ward and the champion, announced his retirement in 1833, James Burke claimed the title and this angered an Irishman called Simon Byrne who had fought, and lost and to Ward in 1831.
Byrne was not a particularly big man and standing only 5 feet 9 inches and weighing 13 stone, but Deaf Burke was even smaller at 5 feet 8 inches, and 12 stone 7 lbs and so the Irishman felt he was onto a good thing.
It was a hard, bloody fight lasting 3 hours and 16 minutes (this time still stands as a world record for a championship fight) before Burke knocked out Byrne with a tremendous punch and thus becoming recognised champion.
Byrne was carried away from the ring unconscious and died three days later without coming out of his coma.
The deaf boxer and all those connected with the fight were arrested and charged with manslaughter. However, conflicting opinions of several doctors gained their acquittal.
However and the tragedy upset Burke and he became convinced people regarded him as a murderer and so he sailed across to the United States. He was the first person to bring Prize Ring fighting to America. He had a fight with a man called Connell, and demolished him in ten minutes.
News spread like wildfire, but it brought Burke unexpected trouble in that a man called Samuel O’Rourke claimed to be a friend of the dead Byrne and challenged Burke to a fight which Burke did not want.
Unable to avoid it, however, he faced O’Rourke in New Orleans where it became apparent that the Irishman had no idea of fighting; Burke was able to hit him at will. This made the local mob angry.
Knives were drawn, and Burke’s life was threatened as he punched O’Rourke into helplessness.

The mathematics of hallucination
IN THE 1960s a mystique surrounded hallucinogenic drugs like LSD because they seemed to enable users to alter their perceptions of reality, and explore their “inner minds”.
Jack Cowan, working at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California and thinks that at least part of the hallucinogenic experience may result from an instability of neural activity in the visual cortex.
He has devised a model based on the mathematics of fluid dynamics and that attempts to explain the genesis of simple geometric patterns seen during the early stages of drug-induced hallucinations (International Journal of Quantum Chemistry , vol 22, p 1059).
At the beginning of a drug-induced hallucination the subject often sees simple, coloured, geometric patterns.
These fall into one or more of four basic forms: grating or network and tunnel or funnel and spiral, and cobweb.
The hallucinations move independently of the eyes and suggesting that the patterns are generated in the visual cortex of the brain rather than on the retina.
The visual cortex consists of tightly packed columns of cells, each column corresponding to a particular point in the visual field in a way that can be mathematically defined.
Using the mathematics of “map” the four basic hallucinatory patterns onto the visual cortex gives quite surprising results.
Tunnel and spiral patterns transform into parallel lines or stripes of neural activity; lattice and cobweb hallucinations transform into regular networks, or lattices.
Cowan was struck by the similarity between these patterns and those seen in the fluid convection under certain conditions.
If a layer of liquid is heated uniformly from below, a temperature gradient is established between the top and the bottom of the layer.
When the temperature gradient exceeds a critical value, convection currents start ” the liquid all wants to rise to the top of the layer, but some must fall to the bottom. The situation is unstable.
To resolve this instability regular patterns of rising and falling liquid can be set up.

If there is a defect in his narrative, it lies in the relatively scanty comment on the impact of JPL on the national and international scientific community.
For example, he mentions the Argus experiment, in which atomic bombs were exploded above the South Atlantic to inject particles into the Earth’s radiation belts.
Nobody would guess from his bland description that this experiment infuriated scientists throughout the world.
What he does describe well are the two faces of excellence as they have characterised JPL.
On the one hand, “Many observers found that JPL in the early and mid-1960s had that high esprit and cohesiveness that mark extra-performance institutions.” On the other and this self belief had its defects.
“JPL’s arrogance…received frequent comment.
There was no doubt that the laboratory’s arrogance made it all too often unnecessarily hard to deal with and overconfident of its abilities.”
Now, with the waning of expenditure on planetary research, both the cohesiveness and the arrogance of the institution are somewhat less evident.
The organisation of JPL, particularly the lack of tenured appointments, must make for increasing internal, as well as external competition for funding, unless additional sources can be tapped.
With the appointment of a new director, who is a former air force chief of staff, a return to military funding, as in the early days of the laboratory, might seem an obvious option.
But JPL is still associated with Caltech, and acceptance of classified research at US universities is much less ready now than it used to be.
That JPL should continue as a research leader is a matter of considerable concern to planetary scientists everywhere. We can only hope that the current problems will be resolved.
Meanwhile, potential creators of university-related science institutions in the UK could do worse than read Koppes’s book for some idea of what might await them. The future is delayed
Profiles of the future by Arthur C. Clarke,Gollancz , pp 251, £8.95 Peter Marsh
This book is subtitled: “An enquiry into the limits of the possible”.
The first edition appeared in 1962, when space satellites were in their infancy and before anyone had invented the word “microelectronics”.
Despite everything that has happened in the interim and the new edition, which includes only minor revisions, is still a thought-provoking and comprehensive primer on the future.
Arthur Clarke skates through questions about mankind’s long-term role in space; transport systems for the Earth; antigravity devices; minerals and energy supplies; time travel; and machine intelligence.

But, more recently it became necessary to introduce an improved system based more fully on microelectronics.
The investment has made Cash strongly competitive, by keeping prices down and improving turn-round.
Although a few jobs have been lost and the workforce today is nearly 200, whose jobs are now more secure because of automation.
Most recently, consider the direct effect at Telford in Shropshire through the expansion of the robot manufacturing activities of Unimation (Europe).
Nearly 250 new jobs have been created in the company, and as many more in its suppliers.
The important point is that increased use of advanced production technology represents a growth area for supply of the equipment involved.
In robotics, for instance a number of British companies have begun to develop and make robots and so creating jobs directly.
Measuring the wider, compensating effects of automation is, of course, difficult.
However, it is clear from a variety of European studies that improved competitiveness helps jobs.
The Institute of Employment Research at Warwick University recently carried out a number of macroeconomic simulations to discover what would happen if Britain installed sufficient microelectronic technology to improve its rate of productivity growth by 1 per cent relative to its competitors.
The answer was that such a technological acceleration would create more jobs than it displaced.
Similarly both the Rathenau Advisory Group in the Netherlands and the Industrial Institute of Economic and Social Research in Stockholm, carried out simulations which indicated that slow introduction of microelectronic technology would have a worse effect on employment than keeping up with other countries. It is not automation but the failure to automate that risks jobs.
Although microelectronic production technology can increase the total number of jobs and the occupational structure of employment is likely to change significantly. In particular.
the demand for engineers and technicians, computer programmers and software experts can be expected to increase sharply. (The NEDC says that already 16 000 more programmers are needed.)
Fewer machine-tool operators, welders and production fitters are likely to be required.
In particular and the new demand is likely to be for those concerned with software.

Princes Street limes have been especially selected as replacement trees, paid for by the town trustees.
The first phase will begin at the Horse and Groom end of the street in the coming financial year and later works will proceed when finance and opportunities permit.
Key aspects of the scheme will be widening and repaving footways and replanting trees and retaining car parking and private accesses and improving lighting. The town trustees say they would welcome any comments on the scheme. Manuscript evening reveals “things not generally known”
FROM memories of a journey through Alresford in the 1920s to a paper on Rasputin and the stories told by members at Alresford Historical and Literary Society’s annual manuscript evening held the large audience’s attention with their detail and variety.
Reg Sanders’ “Things not generally known” opened the evening with a mish-mash of information gleaned through some 300 historical reference books.
For instance, he said that the expression “by hook or by crook” came from the period of Charles II when there were two judges called Hook and Crook and “a man of straw”he discovered, was one who could be brought to bear false witness ” recognisable by the straw in his shoes.
Ursula Oxley read from the memoirs of Henry Hunt who was born Wiltshire, was elected to parliament, and worked for the repeal of the corn laws.
On February 15th, 1835, en route to the west country he stopped at Alresford, was seized by paralysis and died.
His mistress, Mrs. Vince, wanted his body to be placed in her family vault, but the family objected, and the corpse was eventually removed to Parham.
Some years later, another Henry Hunt, Alresford’s famous architect, was born but there is no connection between the two.
Mrs. Oxley concluded her reading with three poignant poems about her son that she wrote herself.
The Russian monk Rasputin, who was influential in Tsar Nicholas II’s court, was the subject of Cyril Flack’s manuscript.
Mr. Flack’s own interest began in 1934 when he was in court for the libel case brought against the MGM film company who had made a film about Rasputin.
The case became the standard for setting the difference between libel and slander.
Early memories of Northern Rhodesia were the inspiration for Robin Grieves-Cook’s manuscript.

Naturally this will also involve a much more critical look at the existing syllabuses and there will be areas where it will be felt that curriculum reforms consistent with enlightened teaching and effective learning are imperative.
If so, any school or group of schools in consultation with the College and the leader of the in-service team may decide to depart from a particular syllabus or portions of it and develop in its place new material which after being tried out and improved upon may be passed on to other schools and colleges for use on a wider scale with the approval of the Ministry.
This will be a definite contribution to a continuous process of renewal of syllabuses and closely linked and incidental to teacher education.”
A further innovation in Botswana has been the setting up of local curriculum development committees. According to the Ministry memorandum their membership should be as follows: 1
the local Education/ Assistant Education Officer (or Chairman) 2
a member of the in-service team
3
a member of the College staff
4
a Headmaster from one of the local primary schools
5
a teacher from one of the local primary schools
In Francistown, where the idea of a local curriculum committee has been most warmly adopted and the actual committee is considerably larger including head teachers of all local primary schools where new approaches are being tried.
Its organisers look on the participation of these head teachers who have become very active as they become increasingly involved, as an indispensable and exciting part of the committee’s operations.
The Ministry’s circular suggested the following as possible roles for the committees: 1
Identification of problem areas in the current syllabuses;
2
Suggestions as to the necessary modifications;
3
Advice on the programme of work to be done in the schools;
4
Preparations for workshops and seminars and courses;

Break them up with screens, furniture or shelving, plants and tables. You may get a result like this:
Manager
“I showed a friend of mine round here one day and she said the most stunning difference was that the clients actually talked to each other.
She’d been into lots of Homes where everybody was sat separately, with their space between their chairs, whereas a lot of our people sit quite close to each other and lean over. If someone falls or something and there is a lot of concern.”
It may not be possible to move furniture around much in a small Home, but the rooms can be put to different uses by changing the dining arrangements. Owner
“I also try and split the House up into smaller groups which is difficult here.
We’ve recently used the front room as a lounge so we have three residents eating in there and three to four eating in one of the other lounges.
It’s made a great thoroughfare in the dining area and broken the dining area up a bit.
“Small spaces help residents to communicate with each other” and also give them somewhere to escape to.
If there are a lot of people sitting in a room they’ll just sit there and they won’t communicate, whereas two or three or four or five residents will communicate quite freely ” they don’t feel inhibited or they don’t feel they’re interrupting somebody else’s television programme or radio or something like that.” Involve the residents
In every Home, meals have to be prepared and tables have to be laid, cleared away, washed up.
Some residents enjoy being useful and helping out with domestic tasks, and a good Home encourages this. Manager
“There are a lot of things that you might expect people to do as part of a normal lifestyle and those are the things that we should invest our time in doing first, I think, before we organise any activity on their behalf.
“They can help with laying tables, preparing some simple meals, buttering bread, making toast and serving meals, clearing away.
I’m not saying that you should make it their responsibility to do these things, but we should offer them the opportunity.”
In all too many places and this opportunity is not offered and a valuable chance is lost. The best time for activities?
You need to consider what activities are most suitable for a particular time of day.
It’s thought that the morning, when people are a bit lively, is a good time for therapy-type activities ” perhaps have a half-hour reminiscence group over a coffee at 9.30 or 10.00 am.
If a group is coming to entertain residents and then bring them in after an afternoon nap.

One or two layers would be in space ” first shooting at missiles as they left the atmosphere and then shooting at re-entry vehicles as they travel through space.
Vital strategic sites and such as fields of missile silos, would be protected by ground-based systems, which would hit incoming warheads.
Some missiles would be likely to leak through each layer but the cumulative effect would be to limit the damage greatly.
The army’s ballistic missile defence command in Huntsville, Alabama, is still working on missile-based “terminal” defence design to stop missiles as they approach their target.
One programme and the low altitude defence system (LOWADS) is intended to protect the MX missile by using nuclear warheads to destroy warheads.
But that programme may be doomed because of the uncertainty over MX and concern that the explosion of the nuclear warhead could knock out the missiles in their silos as well as the incoming warhead.
The hottest programme now is said to be on missiles that would destroy their targets within the atmosphere but without using a nuclear warhead.
The Pentagon is also studying an “overlay” system, in which non-nuclear missiles would destroy warheads or missiles in space en route to their target.
When development of supporting technology for guidance and control is counted in and these ballistic missile defence programmes accounted for about $2900 billion last year with a little over $500 million budgeted for this year.
The Reagan administration has asked for $709.3 million for ballistic missile defence (BMD) for 1984, and has proposed more than double that for 1985.
However and the government is spending much less on developing directed-energy for beam weapons, which is apparently what Reagan had in mind last week during his press conference.
Work on laser weapons in space (New Scientist , 10 June 1982, p 714) is concentrated at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and is budgeted at $148.8 million with a request for $172.6 million in 1984. The plan is for orbiting laser battle stations which would zap Soviet missiles.
The big thrust is to develop three subsystems collectively called the Space Laser Triad, which is budgeted for $71 million in 1983.
The triad includes the 5 MW alpha chemical laser and the large optics demonstration experiment, and a pointing tracking system called Talon Gold.
The first two systems will be tested on the ground in two or three years, while Talon Gold will be tested from the space shuttle at about the same time. It’s a dog’s life for chemical weapons
Nancy Heneson, Washington DC
CHEMICAL weapons against predators that roam the American West apparently interest wildlife managers more than unorthodox, if old-fashioned, alternatives, like guard dogs. A row over which is best will reach the US’s Congress in May.
Hal Black a zoologist from Brigham Young University says dogs might be better at keeping wild coyotes away from livestock than poisonous chemicals.
However, he says, he has been misquoted and his work suppressed by publicly supported scientists who are supposed to follow all research leads on predator control.
Black says that a member of a scientific committee that advises the government on the control of predators “intentionally” excluded references to Black’s work on dogs in a report dated March 1982 to the Environmental Protection Agency.
The report instead came out heavily in favour of a toxicant called Compound 1080 (sodium monofluoroacetate) to kill coyotes.
Then other members of the panel and the Western Regional Coordinating Committee on Predator Control (WRCC-26) and sent a letter to a rancher “apologising” for comments Black allegedly made at the committee’s annual meeting in Waco, Texas.
